Often times on my runs off of Wolf Creek Pass, on the Continental Divide, I’ll be the only one out there for most of the day. Often times in our neck of the San Juans, especially deep in some parts of Pagosa Springs, we are facing extremely challenging environmental conditions on top of being super remote. Mesa Verde National Park is a mere 90 minute drive from downtown Pagosa Springs. While you have a subarctic climate up at Wolf Creek Ski Area you can also drive a couple of hours and get into both the low desert and the high desert. Temperatures on the pass, just 23 miles east of Pagosa Springs, range from lows that stay in the single digits from November to April, to high temps that barely crack the 60’s. We get this classification because of the extreme altitude of Wolf Creek Pass, which tops out at 10,857, and nearly 12,000ft at the top of the Wolf Creek Ski Area. Our favorite ski slope in our far flung south wester corner of Colorado is considered subarctic. The climate on Wolf Creek pass and of Wolf Creek Ski Area is considered as subarctic. While this is somewhat common knowledge, Wolf Creek Ski Area has another big surprise to share. With this much snow, Wolf Creek is one of the best places to ski and snowboard in the state. Wolf Creek gets an average of 430”, the most of any ski area in Colorado. This beautiful mountain is known for getting the most snowfall in Colorado. We are nestled at the base of Wolf Creek Ski Area. We base our headquarters in south-west Colorado, near Pagosa Springs. The Springs Resort and Spa in downtown Pagosa Springs is like a water park for hot springs lovers and its just a 30-minute drive from Wolf Creek Ski Area.
